Bells Beach is one of Australia’s most iconic right-hand point breaks, located on Victoria’s Surf Coast Great Ocean Road and home of the Rip Curl Pro. It produces powerful, long-period walls over a sandstone/limestone reef and is widely regarded as a world class power surfing wave, best suited to intermediate to advanced and expert on bigger days.
The Break Sections
Several distinct rights sit along the headland and can feel connected on solid SW swells:
* Bells Bowl: The signature wave. A powerful, open face right that walls up into a natural amphitheatre, built for long, drawn out carves and occasional heavy sections. Holds serious size.
* Rincon: The outer tip of the point. Faster, steeper rights that work best on smaller swells or higher tides; often the first to light up.
* Winkipop: Just around the headland to the east. A faster, more high performance right with longer walls (up to 150–250 m) and more barrel potential many locals rate it equal to or better than the Bowl on its day.
Best Conditions
* Season: Autumn through winter (April–October) for the biggest and most consistent Southern Ocean SW groundswells. Summer is smaller and more inconsistent.
* Swell: Southwest to south-southwest long-period preferred.
* Wind: Northwest to north / west offshore.
* Tide: Works on most tides; low often best for the Bowl on smaller days, mid to high preferred for Rincon and bigger conditions.
