Crescent Head (The Point) is a classic, long right-hand point break on the mid-north coast of NSW, about halfway between Port Macquarie and Coffs Harbour. It peels over a mix of sand and cobblestone rock around the grassy headland and is widely regarded as one of Australia’s finest longboard waves a National Surfing Reserve known for rides that can stretch 300–500 metres on a good day.
The Break Sections
The banks shift but the headland consistently produces long, walling rights with softer, more forgiving sections further in:
* The Point (main takeoff) The prime zone. A fastish, sometimes hollow takeoff over the outer rocks that settles into a long, peeling, rippable wall perfect for noseriding, cutbacks, and linking sections all the way toward the river mouth.
* Inside / River-mouth banks: Softer, more playful walls and occasional peaks that form across the creek entrance; ideal for longer boards and improvers once the outside has peeled through.
* Killick Beach & Racecourse / Back Beach: Shifting sand-bottom beach peaks and secondary rights along the open coastline south and north — more powerful and peaky options when the point is maxed or the banks are working elsewhere.
Best Conditions
* Season: Year-round, but autumn and winter (March–August) deliver the cleanest groundswell and most reliable offshore winds.
* Swell:East to southeast (best on clean east or ESE swells; also works on NE and some south).
* Wind: West to southwest / south (offshore).
* Tide: Works on all tides; mid and rising generally preferred for the best shape and longest rides when the banks are sanded up.
