Manly Beach is a long, consistent east-facing sand-bottom beach break on Sydney’s Northern Beaches the historic birthplace of Australian surfing and one of the city’s most reliable all levels waves. Stretching roughly 1.5–2 km from South Steyne to Queenscliff, it offers shifting peaks for beginners through advanced, with extra quality on the northern end and serious reef options around the southern headland.
The Break Sections
The banks shift but the beach generally produces lefts and rights with clear zones of quality and power:
* South Steyne: The most sheltered and beginner-friendly end (near the Corso and ferry). Smaller, softer peaks ideal for longboards, surf schools and first-timers.
* North Steyne: Mid-beach peaks in front of the surf club consistent, rippable walls that suit intermediates and work well on a range of swells.
* Queenscliff (north end): The premium beach zone. More exposed A-frames and longer walls (especially around the lagoon/rip), often the best quality on the open beach for intermediate-to-advanced surfers.
* Fairy Bower / southern headland: Advanced-only reef rights (Fairy Bower, Winki, Deadmans) that wake up on solid SE swells longer, more powerful walls over cobblestones and rock.
Best Conditions
* Season: Year-round. Winter (June–August) for the cleanest and biggest SE/S groundswells; summer for warmer water and fun NE–E peaks (though more crowded).
* Swell: Northeast to southeast (east often excellent; SE preferred for the northern banks and headland).
* Wind: West to southwest / northwest (offshore).
* Tide: Works on all tides; mid tide generally preferred for the best shape depending on the banks.
