Gunnamatta is a powerful, exposed beach break on Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula and one of the most consistent and high quality sand bottom setups in the area. Multiple shifting peaks produce strong A frames and punchy lefts and rights, with reefs underneath helping stabilise the banks. Best suited to intermediate and advanced surfers due to the power and strong rips.
The Break Sections
* Main Gunnamatta peaks: The primary zone near the carparks. Consistent lefts and rights over well-formed sandbanks that can throw hollow sections and fast walls when the banks are right.
* Eastern / Point King end: Often a bit more protected and can hold cleaner shape on certain wind directions.
* Inside reforms: On bigger or onshore days, softer inside peaks can still offer fun waves closer to shore.
Best Conditions
* Season: Year round, with excellent windows in autumn (especially March–May) and solid Southern Ocean groundswells through winter; summer NE winds also produce clean sessions.
* Swell: Southwest to south.
* Wind: Northeast to north / east northeast (offshore).
* Tide: Works on all tides; mid to high often preferred for better shape.
