Shipstern Bluff is one of the world’s heaviest and most extreme reef breaks, located on the Tasman Peninsula in southern Tasmania. A mutant rock shelf slab that draws raw Southern Ocean groundswell onto a shallow ledge beneath towering cliffs, it is famous for its thick barrels and the signature “step” a secondary ledge that jacks the face mid ride. Expert and big wave only.
The Break Sections
* Main Shipstern peak: The primary slab. Critical takeoff into thick, ledgy barrels that warp and step mid-face, often requiring an airdrop. Holds serious size (well overhead to 20 ft+ faces).
* The Step: The defining feature a secondary reef ledge that creates a wave within a wave, forcing a second, often airborne drop.
* Nearby options: Smaller, more manageable peaks and beach/reef breaks along the peninsula for when Shippies is too big or not working.
Best Conditions
* Season: Autumn through winter (March–September) for the biggest and most consistent Southern Ocean groundswells.
* Swell: South to south southwest / southwest (long-period preferred).
* Wind: North to northeast (offshore).
* Tide: Mid to high (rising preferred).
