Burleigh Heads is a world-class right-hand point break on the Gold Coast, Queensland, wrapping around a basalt headland. It’s famous for long, hollow, high-performance walls and barrels, and is widely regarded as one of Australia’s most consistent and beautiful point breaks.
The Break Sections
The wave peels along the headland with several distinct sections that can link up on good days:
* Sharkies: The outer peak in front of the bluff. Thick, hollow and powerful — often the heaviest section.
* The Cove: A long, barreling section that wraps into the bay, offering deep tubes and solid walls.
* The Point: The main and most classic section. Long, perfect walls with consistent barrel opportunities and plenty of room for high-performance surfing.
* Rockbreak: A shorter, rockier inside section that works better on smaller days and higher tides.
Best Conditions
* Season: Year-round, with strong winter south swells (May–August) and solid summer cyclone swells (December–March).
* Swell: South to southeast (best with some south in it).
* Wind: Southwest to west (offshore).
* Tide: Low to mid tide is generally preferred for the best shape and barrels.
