South Stradbroke (South Straddie) is a consistent, high-quality sand-bottom beach break on the southern tip of South Stradbroke Island, just across the Gold Coast Seaway from The Spit. It’s known for powerful, hollow peaks and is widely regarded as one of the best and most reliable beach breaks on the Queensland coast.
The Break Sections
The sandbanks shift but generally produce short, intense, hollow waves with both lefts and rights:
* Near the Sand Pipe / Tipplers area: The prime zone. Chunky, powerful peaks that often throw perfect barrels thanks to the constant sand pumping from the seaway.
* Moondarewa Bay / Along the beach: A series of shifting peaks that can run for kilometres, offering hollow bowls and rippable walls when the banks are well-formed.
* Inside sections: Faster, shallower bowls that set up for heavy closeouts or short, intense tubes.
Best Conditions
* Season: Year-round, with consistent banks most of the year. Winter often delivers cleaner, more organised swells.
* Swell: East to southeast (best on clean east swells).
* Wind: West (offshore).
* Tide: Works on all tides; mid to high and rising usually preferred for the best shape and barrels.
