Strickland Bay is the most consistent and popular reef break on Rottnest Island Wadjemup, on the southern side of the isthmus toward West End. It produces heavy, high quality A frame peaks over shallow coral reef and is one of Western Australia’s standout island waves regularly used for state, national and international events, with frequent barrel sections suited to intermediate and advanced surfers.
The Break Sections
The south-facing reef delivers both directions with a clear preference for the left:
* Main Left: The standout ride. A powerful, peeling left that holds size well up to double overhead, offering long walls and a lock-in tube section toward the end.
* Rights: Shorter but consistent rights that work across a wider range of swell sizes, providing fun A-frames and sections when the left is maxed or the banks favour them.
* Inside / Peak zones: Shifting A-frame peaks across the reef that can throw hollow sections on the right tide and swell angle.
Best Conditions
* Season: Autumn through winter (peak consistency in June); the island’s south facing exposure means it often works when mainland Perth spots are smaller.
* Swell: South to southwest (best on solid SW groundswell).
* Wind: Northeast to north / northwest (offshore).
* Tide: High tide strongly preferred (low tide exposes the sharp, shallow reef and increases risk).
