South Point is a left hand point break on the southern side of Cowaramup Bay in Western Australia’s Margaret River region. More approachable than the heavy North Point across the bay, it offers long, rolling walls over reef and boulders and is one of the few local spots that can still work with a south or southwest wind component. Popular with intermediate surfers and a reliable fallback when the exposed coast is blown out.
The Break Sections
* South Point main peak: A left that breaks about 20 m off the rocks. Short steep takeoff into a long, sloping wall ideal for cutbacks and drawn out turns. On bigger SW swells it can stand up further out, offering hollow sections and occasional barrels before easing into the inside.
* Huzzas (inside): Softer lefts and rights over a sand covered reef closer to the stairs. Longer, rolling waves that suit beginners and intermediates when the outer point is bigger or more critical. * Indicators (outer): The larger swell lines that break further out on the point and reform into South Point on solid days.
Best Conditions
* Season: Autumn through winter for the strongest SW groundswells.
* Swell: Southwest to west (needs solid size to fire properly).
* Wind: Southeast to east preferred, can handle southwest/south when other spots are blown out.
* Tide: Works on most tides.
