Tombstones is a world-class left-hand reef break at Gnaraloo Station on Western Australia’s remote northwest coast. One of the state’s most serious waves, it produces long, hollow, freight train barrels that can run 300–500 m over shallow reef. Expert only, remote, and demanding a proper heavy water challenge for experienced surfers.
The Break Sections
* Main Tombstones peak: The primary left. Critical, triple-suck takeoff into thick, continuous barrel sections that race along the reef ledge. Long, powerful walls with little room for error.
* Centres / nearby peaks: Steep, fast lefts in the same zone that can also barrel on the right swell. Slightly different angles and intensity.
* Inside / lower-tide sections: More ledgy and dangerous when the tide drops the reef becomes very shallow and the wave steps up aggressively.
Best Conditions
* Season: April through October (peak consistency in the cooler months).
* Swell: Southwest (SSW–W workable).
* Wind: South-southeast to southeast / south (offshore).
* Tide: Mid to high preferred (dangerously shallow at low tide).
