Smiths Beach is a popular and versatile beach/reef break just south of Yallingup in Western Australia’s Margaret River region. It offers a mix of accessible peaks and more challenging reef sections, making it a reliable option for intermediate to advanced surfers, with softer waves on smaller days that also suit progressing groms.
The Break Sections
Several options sit along the bay:
* Main Ledge / Reef: The original high-performance section. A left and right that break over a reef shelf — early drops into fast walls, occasional barrels, and a clean run into the sandy channel. Best at mid to high tide.
* A-Frames / Beach peaks: Shifting lefts and rights over mixed sand and reef in the centre of the bay. More approachable and fun for a wider range of abilities.
* Supertubes (northern end): The heaviest option. A fast, hollow, shallow right that barrels hard over sharp reef — advanced to expert only, especially once it reaches head-high or bigger.
Best Conditions
* Season: Autumn through winter (March–September) for the strongest and most consistent SW groundswells.
* Swell: Southwest to west / northwest.
* Wind: Southeast to northeast (offshore).
* Tide: Mid to high preferred (low tide can make the reef sections very shallow).
