Snapper Rocks is a world-class right-hand sand-bottom point break at the southern tip of the Gold Coast, Queensland (right on the NSW border). It’s the starting point of the legendary Superbank — a long, linked stretch of high-performance rights that can run for up to 2 km through Rainbow Bay, Greenmount and sometimes all the way to Kirra.
The Break Sections
The wave peels for hundreds of metres (occasionally linking much further), starting technical and often hollow before opening into long walls:
* Behind the Rock: The classic take-off zone. Dramatic, sometimes backwashy drop into a draining barrel right off the rocks.
* Little Marley: Faster, rippable section with rampy walls perfect for high-performance turns.
* Rainbow Bay → Greenmount: Longer, more open walls that allow carving and occasional barrels as the wave continues down the Superbank.
Best Conditions
* Season: December to April/May (cyclone season) for the prime E/SE swells.
* Swell: East to southeast (best when it’s clean and medium-to-long period).
* Wind: Southwest to south (offshore).
* Tide: Works on most tides; mid to low is usually best for barrels and shape.
